This poem, by C.P. Cavafy, was read at journalist Anthony Shadid’s memorial at the American University of Beirut Tuesday.

Colleague 1: I have a strange question for you.
Colleague 2: Do you speak a particular Aboriginal language?
Colleague 1: No, stranger than that....Um, I've noticed that in the office you, well, only tend to wear skirts.

Colleague 1: Specifically for doing fieldwork?
Me: Yes. I loathe pants.
